MATA IMPACT

LAYN is a local youth homeless shelter whose mission is to empower abused, neglected, and homeless adolescents to become self-sufficient. LAYN accomplishes this by providing street outreach, food, emergency shelter, transitional living apartments, and educational enrichment programs in a safe and nurturing environment. The charity’s Gower shelter was in danger of closing due to building dilapidation. Mata Construction teamed with Gensler to renovate the shelter. Mata stepped in with a 100% donation of construction services estimated at $25,000 plus. Focusing on safety and utility, Mata completely renovated the property. Mata reconfigured the kitchen and bathrooms to improve circulation, and outfitted them with new appliances, plumbing fixtures, millwork and flooring. Additionally, Mata replaced rusted plumbing with new pipes, installed new lighting and outlets, and rewired electric circuits, replaced doors, carpeting and lighting throughout the building and refinished and painted walls. Today, the shelter still remains open and houses over 13 homeless youth.

Mata is proud to participate in the Spark Mentorship Program. Spark, a national nonprofit that offers a unique program that re-engages underserved middle school students in their education through hands-on apprenticeships and leadership curriculum. Spark partners with schools and workplaces in six cities coast-to-coast to match low-income 7th and 8th graders with mentors working in career fields aligned with the students’ strengths and interests. Spark’s parallel in-school curriculum reinforces the link between classrooms and careers while helping students build skills key to success in the 21st century. After eight years and more than 2,350 apprenticeships, the results are clear: Spark students consistently gain confidence, key skills, and positive relationships, and have a graduation rate far above the national average.

Mata Construction has teamed with the Department of Health Services, Gensler and Skid Row Housing Trust to build new retail clinic facility in the Star Apartment Development in Downtown Los Angeles. The project is the first of its kind and will serve as a game changing development for the Skid Row Housing Trust Star Apartment project. The clinic will provide on-site medical, mental and physical fitness facilities to Los Angeles homeless population.
